Does Hannibal Lector Work For the NYPD?

A New York City police officer is n FBI custody after authorities gathered information that he allegedly planned on kidnapping, killing and eating as many as 100 women.

Gilbert Valle III, 28, was taken into custody and charged with one count of conspiracy to commit kidnapping. Valle also allegedly used  the National Crime Investigation Center database to access data without authorization.

The criminal complaint states that Valle kept computer records, including pictures, of at least 100 women and that he used the police database to monitor for potential victims.

Valle also allegedly communicated online with a co-conspirator in which Valle made many disturbing remarks. In one online exchange Valle allegedly stated "I love that she is asleep right now not have the slightest clue of what we have planned." "Her days are numbered . . . She does look tasty, doesn't she?" The co-conspirator replied ""You do know if we don't waste any of her, there is nearly 75 lbs of food there,".

It was unclear from the story I read if the co-conspirator has been taken into custody. I sure hope that authorities have found him.

I'm assuming that authorities have been monitoring Valle for sometime, stemming most likely from his unauthorized use of the NCIC database. This story is really disturbing and almost hard to believe in a way.

The scariest part of this story isn't all the gruesome details. It's that Valle was a police officer who is sworn to serve and protect. It makes you wonder what other places people like this are hiding in society. I'm thankful that he was apprehended (hopefully) before he had a chance to hurt anyone.

Gay Marriage is Subject of Fraud in Small Iowa Town

Grundy County, Iowa-

A  Deputy County Clerk of Court has been charged with two counts of felony forgery and one count of felony perjury in a gay marriage scam.

Iowa is one of eight states that allow same sex marriages. Investigators say the Brigitte Van Nice, 42, used her position to file false documents to marry a gay Florida couple, even though the two men never visited the state. Investigators discovered the false documents after one of the men contacted an attorney about getting a divorce.

In February, Van Nice filed a falsified marriage license stating that she officiated the couples marriage and that two women had witnessed the marriage. Van Nice, who is ordained to perform marriages, claims that she met the two men at a truck stop and arranged for their marriage the next day. Investigators learned that this meeting never took place and that Van Nice profited $150 dollars from the two men.

The two men are not being charged, as prosecutors believe that they were unaware that they were being taken advantage of.

Gay marriage has been a controversial topic for many years now, and this story is gaining national attention. This is the first case of gay marriage fraud that has been reported.

As a reader, is gay marriage an important issue to you? Do you feel like cases like this are going to be more common as many states continue to deny gay marriage? Should the federal government take action?

I feel that gay marriage should be left to the states to decide, which is the current system. I am still uncertain whether or not gay marriage is the best thing for society. There is support from many people to allow for gay marriage and that is offset by the many that oppose it. It's a moral dilemma in which both sides continue to make their cases known.

I am sure that other cases like this will happen in the future, and I'm sure that there are more that will be discovered.

Whether you believe in same sex marriage or not, it is going to continue to be an issue. I like to consider it the "new abortion" ,in that, it is extremely controversial and stakeholders claim similar views based on religion and liberalism. It's a controversy based on morals with two opposing sides. That's a different way of saying that this debate will never end.

State's Attorney Often Lessens DUI Charges

Sargent County, ND-

The state's attorney for  Sargent County, North Dakota has used his power to lessen charges for first time DUI offenders. Lyle Bopp has reduced many DUI cases to reckless driving. He states several reasons for lessening the charges. One is that he wants to give people whom have made a mistake a second chance. He also said that he doesn't want to burden people with heavy car insurance premiums in a rural county that doesn't have public transportation.

Another reason for reducing charges, Bopp admits, is in protest of recent budget cuts for the Department of Transportation in Sargent County. Local law enforcement and the State Highway Patrol are discouraged by Bopp's actions.

Bopp follows his own set of standards when it comes to deciding if a person will receive a lesser charge. He stated that he will not amend charges for repeat offenders, or person with a high blood alcohol content, or 0.15 or higher.

Does Bopp have the right, as an elected official, to make decisions that circumvent law? Is he setting a bad precedence for other counties in the state? Part of me wants to say he is way out of line, while the other part of me can sympathize with his efforts, however egotistical they may sound.

I don't feel that he alone should be making the judgement call in these cases. What about the District Judge and his/her job to uphold and interpret the law? What about the arresting officers who are doing their best to keep citizens safe?

Officers feel that Bopp may be sending the wrong message when it comes to drinking and driving. I completely agree with that assessment. It is very likely that people won't take the offense as serious if they know that they won't be prosecuted to the normal extent.

I also feel that this isn't an issue where Bopp should be using it as protest for budget cuts in his county. I think he is downplaying the seriousness of the offense. It is a completely unrelated issue. He is an elected official who should stress his concerns through the proper channels, not by using his power to set examples and address a different issue entirely.

I don't have as much of a problem with him being liberal because he is concerned for those who have made a mistake. Insurance premiums can skyrocket after a DUI conviction. I don't want people's lives to be ruined over a mistake made while drinking. Although, I feel that this, to some degree, is just an excuse for him to display his displeasure with the DOT cuts.

This story is gaining attention from an article in the Fargo Forum, and I'm sure this isn't the last we will here about it.

Cabrera Joins Very Short List of Greatness

Kansas City, MO- Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers became the first person to win the Triple Crown in 45 years. He did so to a standing ovation from the Kansas City Royals and their fans. The Triple Crown is one of the hardest achievements to attain in baseball. To win a Triple Crown, a player must lead in batting average, runs batted in (RBI"s) and home runs. Cabrera finished with a .330 average, 44 home runs and 139 RBI.

The last major leaguer to accomplish this feat was Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski for the Boston Red Sox in 1967. That year, Yaz batted .326, with 44 home runs and 121 RBI. There were many baseball followers, including myself, that felt that no one would ever win the prestigious title again. There have been a few players over the past 45 years that have come somewhat close, but never had a legitimate chance like Cabrera did coming into the final series of the season.

Cabrera is also one of the leading candidates for the American League MVP award. Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels is considered the other major front runner. Trout, who is  a lock for Rookie of the Year, is the only rookie to hit 30 home runs and steal more than 30 bases. There is great debate among the sports world about the MVP race. Does winning the Triple Crown all but guarantee Cabrera the MVP award? I think so, and    that's not to belittle what Trout accomplished in his first full season.

MVP stands for Most Valuable Player and Cabrera was exactly that for his team. Without his astonishing season, I don't think the the Detroit Tigers make the playoffs. Trout and the LA Angels had more wins than the Tigers, but they play in a different division. The Angels fell a few games short of the postseason behind Texas and Oakland.

I spent last night glued to the television to see all that happened on the final day of the season. There were several playoff spots that were decided on the last day, Cabrera's Triple Crown, and many great games to reflect on this past season. This is exactly the type of season that Major League Baseball needed. There were great pennant races in both leagues, seven no-hitters were thrown and teams like the Nationals and Orioles are seeing there first playoff action in many years. I hope that the playoffs prove to be as memorable as this season was. Congratulations to Miguel Cabrera on a historic season and good luck in the playoffs.
